Hidden gem of the week!

Post by DJ Mike TJG » 23 Jan 2009, 11:58

From time to time I love to seek out older EB songs that have fallen by the wayside, either because they seldom tend to appear on new megamixes (if at all), nobody talks about them, they got too old, or I simply never gave them a fair chance.

Quite often I find an old song that I never knew existed, but nonetheless suddenly works its way into my rotation because I enjoy it so much!

I invite you all to nominate *one old song* on a weekly basis that you've discovered/re-discovered, that hasn't really been talked about much, most likely 'cause it's rather old now! :) Try to include which album/where you heard it!

I'm interested to see what recommendations come out of the woodworks - there's such a huge amount of EB songs (in the thousands) and so many of them appear once and never again.

My song for this week is...

Norma Sheffield / Look Me In The Eyes

... appeared all the way back on Maharaja Night 1. I haven't really had a lot of time to audition the very early MN albums, but this song stood out as a classic example of how awesome Norma's music used to be. A very dream-like quality with airy synths, beautiful chord structure and a very memorable chorus/instrumental.

Time to rediscover forgotten Eurobeat!

My nomination is for Kamasutra Dance/ Virginelle

Anouther gem from the Maharaja series. Since, I'm not very good at musical jargon and describing "soundworld" and "riffs", I'll just tell you I think it's one of the best early Virginelle entries. Lyrics are thought out, the melody is amusing. This is the kind of song that harkens me back to the golden age of A-BEAT C music. DAVE! MAYBE GOING BACK TO AN OLDER SOUNDING STYLE IS WORTH IT!

My nomination: Kiki / Touch me Honey

It's one of my favorite songs, and it comes from the ParaPara HiBPM series produced in 1994/1995. It sounds soo good!!

SAMPLE!!!

"Oh Oh Cowboy" by Franz Tornado.

Masterfully made and a beautiful example of Hi-NRG Attack at its best. It's hidden in the sense that it's only available on iTunes... and nowhere else that I know.
A lot's changed in the decade and a half I've been here.

Cherry - Stop Teasing My Heart

I remember liking this song when it originally came out, but never really considered it to be a real bull's eye. Now it randomly popped up on a playlist and it suddenly sounded magnificent, nice to get some extra insight on some songs that might've been somewhat ignored at the time of the release.

Dominique Pratt - Dum Dum(Vibration)(Euromach vol. 6, ParaPara Classic vol. 1) One of VIB's forgotten gems, originally produced way back in 1996, written by the late Gino Caria, A. Ferraris and Annerley Gordon. I wonder who the singer behind this alias was.

Jungle Bill - Caterpillar Man (SEB vol. 174)

Ted Candela(aka Riki 1) - Victim Of Love(ParaParaCool vol. 2)

Domino - Forever Young (Maharaja Night 1) The "forgotten" Domino song, this isn't even on the Special Collection, at least not the volume that's been released so far.

David - Ready To Love (LED/Energy Revolution)(Europanic 4, Eurobeat Super Collection vol. 2)

Delta Queens - Laser Love (AFAIK, only released on Eurobeat Masters vol. 6, iTunes/Juno). Rather unique sound for Delta, how old is this song?

I've been going through a bunch of songs tonight and a few popped up that I use to LOVE listening to 'back in the day.'

Knick Knack - I Know Your Game

Groove Twins - I'm The Queen Of The Night

Luna - Guardian Angel

Get Away - Rodgers, Contini & Sinclaire

Don't ask me why, it just popped up one day and I thought it sounded good.
You and me like a fire tonight
Me and you 2 guardian angels
Now I feel your touch into my heart
A ray of sun~

- Guardian Angels / Oceania

Black Eva - Space Rider (ParaParaCool vol. 1) A rather underappreciated more innovative/creative HRG song. And the vocals weren't pitched too much this time, except for parts of the chorus.

Big Brother - Wild Reputation. IMO, the 2005 remix sounded too similar to the original, do you think?

'Baby Illusion' by Mike West. Actually, just about every song from SEB173 was seriously underrated, but this was my top pick off the disc.

Also, 'Every Dog Has His Day' by Stop Limit Line. The last time I listened to it was over four years ago - I forgot how good it was!

Pink Star - Only When I Dance (SEB 173). Was she truly a one-track wonder? Or may we hear from her again? Why would this artist fade into oblivion so soon?

Believe it or not, I actually found the 2005 remake to be a lot better - mostly because it was a much more energetic, fleshed out approach. While I don't have a problem with the original, it's very much a symbol of its time - more disco-like with sparser sounds.

And that's not to mention that awesome guitar solo in the remake! :)

Canibal Man- Disco Vega(ABeatC)SEB 35. One of those oldies whicjh featured one of my favourite Eurobeat singers at ABeatC., David SRB. I love his smooth vocal style, but at the same TIME sexy lined vocals. This particular tune had a feirce synth riff and heavy Dead Or Alive-like vibe in its melody. Songs like Sledghammer, I Want Your Sex and Dollar In My Pocket remain to be among my favourite ABeatC songs eva.
