Eurovision Song Contest 2010

Post by the_ditz » 25 May 2010, 22:04

About time we had a Eurovision Song Contest thread for 2010 since the first semi-final has just taken place tonight in Oslo, Norway.

17 acts took to the stage tonight, but only 10 acts qualified by public vote and jury to take part in the final on Saturday night. They are (in no particular order)...

SERBIA - Milan Stankovic - "Ovo je Balkan"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-tqbMDeEW4

MOLDOVA - Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira - "Run Away"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOJN9FJAw_s

PORTUGAL - Filipa Azevedo - "Ha Dias Assim"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLSmlTqn3MA

ICELAND - Hera Bjork - "Je Ne Sais Quoi"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54AWeLh1B9c

ARMENIA - Juliana Pasha - "It's All About You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4TMpRyFinU

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA - Vukasan Brajic - "Thunder & Lightening"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5gNLcBA0GU

BELGIUM - Tom Dice - "Me and My Guitar"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC8EQlFWMrc

BELARUS - 3+2 - "Butterflies"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv6CZfTzVgg

RUSSIA - Peter Nalich & Friends - "Lost & Forgotten"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DID3IJTflFA

GREECE - Giorgios Alkaios & Friends - "OPA!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqNXoZE3i2s

I predicted all of the above, except the mournful dirge that is Russia (snore), the fairly snooze-worthy Belarus (that first guy's voice is ugly) and Portugal (Mariah Carey wannabe). Instead, I'd rather have Slovakia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIFFADG-S20), Malta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zviBlmlQP0s) and Finland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whEqgum2WAI).

The second semi-final is this Thursday and here are some songs that I predict will be big:

ROMANIA - Paula Seling & Ovi - "Playing With Fire"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AYMXnfS_uc

CROATIA - Feminnem - "Lako je Sve"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFUmSprZpg

TURKEY - maNga - "We Could Be The Same"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-m8_j9Bqo8

GEORGIA - Sofia Nizharadza - "Shine"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfoyJvWlkhE

Sadly Finland didn't qualify from the first Semifinals. I initially loathed their song but the performance was pretty spot on and wasn't definitely from the worse end of the quarter.

Personal favorites out of the first bunch were Iceland, Albania and Moldova. For the first time in quite a while the big countries also have good songs. Germany's Satellite is really adorable, France's football anthem is catchy and Norway is as powerful as ever. UK is kind of embarrassing to listen to.... and will definitely not succeed well. The poor lad looks so lost.

Serbia & Russia should not have qualified this time around, both songs were just hella annoying to listen to. At least Estonia's horrid song didn't succeed.

The UK entry is awful. Written by Pete Waterman, but nowhere near his classic pop tracks from the 80's or 90's - it's a sad excuse for a pop track with more cliches than an Elvis impersonator convention...

I really like the French entry (which is odd since they normally send crap) - I reckon it could easily play on the World Cup fever to get a lot of votes. But my absolute favourite at the moment is Croatia. Lako je Sve is such a gorgeous track that builds slowly all the way through to an impressive climax. Best ballad in the contest hands down.

It annoys me that so many countries have jumped on the "fiddle" bandwagon this year after Alexander Rybak's winning performance last year. It just makes them seem a bit desperate to me.

I'm so glad the Netherlands didn't make it through the first round,
the song is awful.

I personally like the Belgium entry very much, but I don't feel like it's a 'eurovison'-ish song. It's just a nice, sweet song.

The Netherlands are in the second semi-final tomorrow night, so hold that thought... :P

Looking forward to tonight's semifinals. Haven't listened much to previews yet, but heard a lot of positive buzz regarding Azerbaijan, Israel and Denmark.... Shall see what all the fuzz is about then. The far eastern countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia and Ukraine seem to pull off really good songs year after year, so looking forward to them at least.

The telly claimed that this 2nd semifinal had the better songs according to betting, but I only could find a few really good tracks in the whole selection.

During the first semifinal I predicted 7/10 right, let's see how this one goes.

But god damn at Romania! A superb performance and definitely the best one so far. Although Ireland and Bulgaria sounded really good as well.

EDIT:

Okay after hearing all of the songs I have a pretty clear idea in my head about my favorites:

1.Iceland
2.Norway
3.Romania
4.Turkey
5.Moldova
6.Germany
7.France
8.Albania
9.Bulgaria ->Azerbaijan
10.Ireland

Shall see if my favorites from the 2nd semifinal make it through.

EDIT #2, So everyone except Bulgaria made it through to the finals out of my favorites. So I shall have to replace Bulgaria from the final list with Azerbaijan.

SEMI-FINAL 2 QUALIFIERS:

The second semi-final results are in, and there are some surprises. For me, there was a lot more competition than in the first semi-final, with many many great songs and performances.

The lucky 10 to advance to Saturday's final are:

ARMENIA - Eva Rivas - "Apricot Stone"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdAd4Y8agas

ISRAEL - Harel Skaat - "Milim"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wazbzkMBNLo

DENMARK - Chanee & N'evergreen - "In A Moment Like This"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwnkDgk-qlE

AZERBAIJAN - Safura - "Drip Drop"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3OxvTKIluQ

UKRAINE - Alyosha - "Sweet People"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0krO1-m6bw

ROMANIA - Paula Seling & Ovi - "Playing With Fire"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFYLp-r0ZVA

IRELAND - Niamh Kavanagh - "It's For You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_zsroaez2c

CYPRUS - John Lilygreen & The Islanders - "Life Looks Better In Spring"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHZjOH3oMPc

GEORGIA - Sofia Nizharadza - "Shine"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfoyJvWlkhE

TURKEY - maNga - "We Could Be The Same"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-m8_j9Bqo8

Just like in the first semi-final, I predicted 7 out of 10 of the qualifiers. I didn't agree with Ukraine especially (that was a terrible piece of indulgent self-pity), and the Turkish and Cyprus performances just didn't grab me as much as some others, although I do still enjoy them.

I'm gutted that Croatia didn't get through (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFUmSprZpg) as it is most definitely the most sincere and addictive ballad this year. I would also have liked to see Bulgaria and Sweden get through, but to a lesser degree.

So now that all 25 finalists are known, I'll post the full starting order and links of all of the finalists tomorrow in time for you all to decide your favourites before Saturday! For now, my standouts are Romania, Iceland, Germany and France. But there are loads of fantastic songs and performances this year with no clear winner in my eyes, so it should be an exciting vote on Saturday night!

Couldn't agree more - had both me and my mum shimmying like crazy along to the funky piano chords! On a side note, did the lyrics in the chorus not make you think of a Eurobeat song:

"You and me, can't you see we're playing with fire,
Tell me now, do you feel this burning desire?
Don't stop, make it rock, it's taking us higher
Could it be just a dream, are you running away?"

All that fire, desire, higher - Eurobeat producers and composers of the world rejoice, you have influenced the Eurovision Song Contest! :D

I can't help but feel malicious at the Swedes this year around. They are pretty much every year in the finals and this year they don't qualify for the first time in ages (Mind you, their song sucked ass, so no wonder they got left out) and their newspapers start writing about catastrophes and questioning whether they should step out of the whole competition. Just sounds so ridiculous when we Finns have gotten used to being left out pretty much every 2nd year (or more). But maybe our pessimistic mentality just does us justice and we don't mind being out constantly. Nobody loves Finland anyways.

This has got to be the best year in Eurovision! I've never seen the winner being as genuinely happy and shocked about winning. Lena performed magnificently and Satellite is just stunningly witty and catchy. The whole top 3 was just great, Romania my personal favorite getting their history's highest placing at #3 was definitely worth it.

A SUPERB Competition! A shame Iceland didn't do as good as last year, but at least they didn't do a UK.

Oh and the final list:

1. Germany: Lena "Satellite"
2. Turkey: maNga "We Could Be The Same"
3. Romania: Paula Seling & Ovi "Playing With Fire"
4. Denmark: Chanee & N'evergreen "In A Moment Like This"
5. Azerbaizan: Safura "Drip Drop"
6. Belgium: Tom Dice "Me And My Guitar"
7. Armenia: Eva Rivas "Apricot Stone"
8. Greece: Giorgos Alkaios & Friends "OPA"
9. Georgia: Sopho Nizharadze "Shine"
10. Ukraine: Alyosha "Sweet People"
11. Russia: Peter Nalitch "Lost And Forgotten"
12. France: Jessy Matador "Allez! Ola! Ole!"
13. Serbia: Milan Stankovic "Ovo Je Balkan"
14. Israel: Harel Skaat "Milim"
15. Spain: Daniel Diges "Algo Pequenito"
16. Albania: Juliana Pasha "It's All About You"
17. Bosnia-Herzegovina: Vukasin Brajic "Thunder And Lightning"
18. Portugal: Filipa Azevedo "Ha Dias Assim"
