Review time for me again!...
01 KEVIN & CHERRY - CHEMICAL LOVE (DELTA) - 8/10
Okay, the first thing that hit me about this track is that the intro really doesn't do very much at all - it's all just your typical generic Initial-D style bleeps and sound effects - luckily from the 32 second mark where that explosive synth hook bursts into life, things improve loads! Kevin and Cherry's vocals sound really good together, and the vocal melody overall was quite a pleasant surprise. As were the backing sections during the verses, with that cool glockenspiel-style rise & fall synth. The chorus totally drills into your brain like nothing else! If anything, the sound effects at the very end seem far too raw in the way that they cut off and echo - I'd have preferred a smoother fade out there.
02 CHRISTINE - YEAH! (SCP) - 8.5/10
It's not often you hear such a well-crafted major-key track with such a positive vibe running through the whole song. This song would be just as much at home in Asia's catalogue under the Milk & Coffea alias, as it has that really cute and happy feeling to it. From the first note of the intro, this song flows amazingly well with each section leading perfectly into the next. The vocal melody is one that I can imagine a massive arena of Eurobeat fans screaming at a live concert! I especially like the held note at the end of the bridge, which sets up the chorus beautifully! And any song that uses the lyric "Boombastic" so masterfully deserves special credit! ^_^
03 JILLY - DING A LING 2006 (TIME) - 8/10
Okay, first off I've never heard the original of this song, so I have to treat this as a completely new experience. I was a bit put off by the fragmentation of the beats in the intro, as it wasn't easy to listen to. Then when that really muted synth line began at the 20 second mark, I was feeling a bit deflated as I thought it was the main hook. How happy was I when only 13 seconds later, this explosive, stuttering, old-school Eurobeat lead moves the song on to the next level!! To be completely honest, I'm not mad about the vocal melody - it all sounds a bit too generic in old school terms during the verses, but the chorus is much better and I love the little synth hits on the 4th beat of each measure. One of the better 2006 remakes, but not the best (On My Own 2006 still holds that title).
04 MANUEL - SUN IN THE RAIN (A-BEAT C) - 8.5/10
I have high expectations for this track after No Control on 164. I loved the little "YEAH!" during the intro, as if to say "I'm ready for this - bring it on!" The synth hook to be honest reminded me far too much of a fusion of Please Don't Go and No Control, which disappointed me slightly. The whole production has that trademark Manuel feel to it - from the chord progression to the beats and hits, everything screams his style. In terms of the vocal melody, Manuel once again takes on a challenging succession of notes that not all Eurobeat vocalists would be able to pull off, but he seems to do it much such style. The frequent "YEAHS" and "ALRIGHTS" interlaced with the vocals really show that he is a vocalist that is very comfortable with the style that he has found, and he really sounds like he's enjoying himself. I'd have still liked this to be a bit more original though.
05 BOMBERS - DISCO ENERGY (ASIA) - 7.5/10
Like most other people, this track is nothing new to me, so once more the deciding factor is the quality of the SEB edit. I was happy to hear a smooth intro section that flowed well (I just love that "DISCO DISCO ENERGY..." chant, soooo infectious!) The most disappointing part for me was that after the second chorus and synth hook, nothing much seemed to happen! I was expecting to hear the excellent breakdown of the verse and bridge from the extended version leading up tot he explosive ending, but no instead we get the dull filler interlude followed by another reprise of the synth hook and chant. I'm sorry, but this just ruined my enjoyment of the track, especially considering the great breakdowns that Saifam do in the verse and bridge reprises. The song is still fantastic, but I'm marking it down for the uninspired edit.
06 LOLITA - LISTEN TO MY HEART (A-BEAT C) - 8.5/10
Hmmm, Lolita sounds like she's in a really mellow, chilled out mood at the start of this song. Restrained vocals that are quite low in the register for her, which took me by surprise. The overall tone of the song just screams of a female Manuel track to me, which could work pretty well considering Lolita's back-up vocals on Shock Me from 148. I'm happy to say that this positive start continued into the chorus, as Lolita manages to infuse her unique vocal style into a backing that sounds totally different from her usual style of track. I also loved hearing the verse and bridge breakdown, as it showcased her vocal talents even more - I will argue to the high heavens with anyone who claims that Lolita can't sing!!
07 70's QUEENS feat. ANNALISE & VIRGINELLE - GET UP AND MOVE IT (A-BEAT C) - 7/10
The intro of this song, along with the song title and even artist name just screams DDR 5th Mix to me. The song itself could be characterised as a sort of fusion between disco, funk and more Italo dance styles so that makes it quite unique in that respect. However, the vocal melody fails to really grab my attention significantly - it's nice enough, but it sounds like so many generic disco tracks from the 70s that I found it hard to warm to it that much. As an experiment, this is an interesting attempt to bring something different to the SEB family, however the lack of a funky breakdown just confirms for me that it is one of the weaker tracks on the album. Still very catchy and worth a listen, but the company here is just too excellent!
08 JOE D. TOASTER - SEX GUN (HI-NRG ATTACK) - 8/10
Before I heard this song, I was really hoping for another hot piece of HRG craziness like Black Night Cadillac, and the initial signs here were good. The really dominant bassline and scrambling beats during the intro seemed to be building up to something big.....and oh yes, we have a classic HRG style full-on piece on synth hook goodness!!! Sorry, I'm just really excited to hear the same style of hook that Black Night Cadillac had back on SEB - it's been too long! The vocal melody, as ever with HRG, can't really be taken too seriously, and it's pretty standard fayre from them really - they perhaps reuse old melodies a tad too much, but it all works. The chorus deserves a special mention for the totally nutty fake voice that Joe puts on for it - he sounds like he's trying to sing it with his fist in his mouth!! HRG are back and kicking once again!!!
09 PAMSY - WALKIN' IN THE SHADOW (SCP) - 9.5/10
Ooooh, this is faster than I was expecting from Pamsy. Thankfully, she's stuck with the slightly darker and slow-burning atmosphere that was present in So Fragile and contrasts so well with her often fragile and innocent sounding vocals (that "Walkin' In The Shadow" at 20 seconds just makes me want to pick her up and give her a big protective hug!) Much like Manuel's sound, Pamsy feels totally at home singing this track, like she's finally found the style she was born to sing. I love the simple synth hook - frantic synths would have ruined the flow of the song I think - and overall the production is as good as SCP has ever done. In fact, during the final synth breakdown, it actually sounds a lot like what Shin produces for The Paradise Last projects! A fantastic song all-round.
10 DE LEO - DON'T YOU BREAK MY HEART TONIGHT (TIME) - 8.5/10
I love the really happy and cheery synths present from the start of this track, as they hint at a very positive and melodic song. And that's exactly what we get! I have to admit there was a dodgy moment at the very end of the intro with the "All my secrets" which sounds a bit out of place leading into the synth. It doesn't sound as bad further on, as it has some backing to improve the tone. The vocal melody has a gorgeous tone and I love the rise and fall of the chorus in particular. And the breakdowns towards the end just add to the variety of the whole track. Overall, this is a very pleasant surprise from Time, who very rarely impress me that much. But please, stop with the fadeouts!!
11 KAREN - LOST IN THE WORLD (A-BEAT C) - 7/10
Karen can either be utterly fantastic or pretty lame to be honest, and this song walks the very thin line between the two. The tone of the intro just seems quite ugly, and it doesn't set the song up well. The synth hook brings things back on track a little, although it sounds a bit too much like that old Eurodance favourite, the Saw Wave. The vocal melody is a real mess to be honest - it sounds like Karen is making up the verses as she goes along, and the chorus doesn't seem to have any logical flow and seems to just meander on in random directions. The production is decent though and holds everything together, but after the amazing "Fly in the Sky" from 165, I can't help but feel deflated by this mediocre track.
12 PRISCILLA - HEART AND GO (DELTA) - 7.5/10
This really brings something new into the equation. The almost house-style piano section in the intro leads into a real old-school synth feast harking back to the glory days of Eurobeat Flash and Maharaja Night. I was overjoyed to hear that crazy synth hook with old-school beats backing it up, as it reminded me of fantastic older-style tracks like "Gonna Be The One" by Phil & Stan. By contrast the vocal section appears to start off almost too cheery and bouncy for the song, and it gets a bit messy from there on. The bridge sounds like a completely different song, with the chorus transplanted from yet another song (or so it seems...) So after a really cool intro and synth hook, the vocal melody seems to let everything down. Still there is something about this track that I love, it has me fascinated!
13 SUSY - GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE (ASIA) - 9/10
Aaaah, my darling Susy! As soon as I heard the sample of this on the Saifam website months ago, I downloaded it straight away. I was mesmerised by the strong and powerful Saifam beats contrasting with the fragile, cutesy vocals and synth hook. The chorus is screaming to be screamed out by the listener, and the more I listen to the track the more it reminds me of the excellent female HRG tracks from Eurobeat Flash. Thankfully, Avex haven't butchered this one in the SEB edit, but that's maybe because the extended version is shorter. The ending is slightly odd to be honest, but overall this is a fantastic addition to the album.
14 IDOL - IDOL (TIME) - 8/10
I love the way this track makes you think the synth hook is gonna be quite weak, before the vocalist screams "IDOL FOR YOUR VANITY!" and unleashes a much meatier sounding lead. It's nice to have a slower track after the fast-paced Susy and the tone and backing of this song really appeal to me, with the growling guitars in the background. There has to be a downside, and for me it comes in the chorus with the lyric "Idol, please don't forget my crazy passion tonight" - these lyrics just seem to catch the vocalist off-guard and throw him out of his comfort zone a little. More unique Time-style breakdowns are present, before an actual ending rather than a fadeout! Time really are growing on me...
15 MADISON - REMIND ME TO FORGET (DELTA) - 5/10
What a crappy song title this song has - it sort of has me expecting the worst from the beginning to be honest. The main problem I have with this song is that it just seems to trundle along quite happily with Madison's relatively weak vocals flatulating around the top of the sparse backing. Also, the lyrics leave a lot to be desired - "Everytime you're in my arms, I feel like a crazy mum" What?? Even HRG would steer well clear of that lyric!! And this sort of unimpressive tone and production continues for the rest of the song, with nothing really original coming into the picture. It's not an absolute wreck like 166's HRG efforts, but it's not that great either.
16 MAD COW & THE HARAJUKU ANGELS - HARAJUKU GIRL (HI-NRG ATTACK) - 8/10
Okay, so in this intro we have Mr. Cow singing underwater through a snorkel while a mob of angry miners chant "HARAJUKU!" above the surface. Yep, HRG are definitely back!! The synth hook sounds slightly watered-down, but the vocals sound fresh and interesting. The chorus actually sounds like it has been taken directly from one of the label's tracks from the Euromach era and it gave me a nice sense of nostalgia when I heard it. And my god have I missed a good HRG vocal breakdown!!
17 DAVE & NUAGE - LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME (A-BEAT C) - 7.5/10
It's weird, before I even heard any part of this song, I had this idea in my head of how the song title would be sung - the "Love Me" would be high but descending, and the "or Leave Me" would be lower but ascending. And what do we have here? The exact melody I heard in my head! Does this make this song a bit old and predictable? Perhaps, as Dave has done better duets in the past, but I still think this song is very well-produced and shows a more gentle side to Dave's artistic abilities. Nuage sounds quite bored in places - she definitely shines more on her own.
18 GO 2 - MUSIC COME ON! (SCP) - 9.5/10
Wow! Okay, where on Earth did this come from?? No speedy beats? No bonkers screaming? No "let's go!" or "Yeah, c'mon!"?? Perhaps the Go 2 boys are trying to show us their more reflective side. The guitar intro does remind me of the dodgy Moon Child at the beginning, but thankfully the strong beat and guitar puts that thought to bed! The highlight of this whole song is the excellent melodic synth hook - I can't get enough of it! In terms of the vocals, it is clear that Fastway shines the brightest in this type of environment as Ace struggles to restrain his vocals. I also love the short guitar solo interlude towards the end, as it shows these boys can still rock if they wanted to. The biggest disappointment was the fade out, as they could easily have just ended the final synth hook with a beat breakdown and explosion...
OVERALL:
Without a doubt, this is the best SEB album to be released in a long long time. There is just track after track of great melodies and vocal performances that blew me away from the first listen. The only real thorn in the side is Madison who sounds tired and out-of-fashion among this collection of fresh-sounding tracks. There is definitely hope for the future of Eurobeat, as can be seen from the confident performances from Pamsy and Go 2, and Saifam have further established themselves at the top of the table. A special mention must go to Time, who finally seem to be trying new production techniques to bring their tracks up-to-date - I'll look forward to more of the same in the future! Anyway, this album gets an overall 8.5/10 due to the consistancy and quality of the tracks!
01 KEVIN & CHERRY - CHEMICAL LOVE (DELTA) - 8/10

I personally didn't like this album very much, too many romantic songs.I felt like, is this really a super eurobeat album? The go 2 song introduction is simply pathetic ,arghhhh. It looks like one of those boybands type of music, what the hell is happpening?I hope this trend ends very soon.
Manuel you if you are reading this, you just saved this album, Y E A H!!!!!!

Wow, I really love this album
Chemical Love is incredible and so is Get Up And Move It (despite the fact that Elena Gobbi sometimes over powers Annerley Gordon). I haven't had time to really listen to all of them, but there are only a few I don't really like.
Oh and it seems they finally gave the model credit (i.e. a name!) dunno when they started this though, this is the only 160 series I have.
