Review of several of the songs on @Avex

Post by Jion » 11 Oct 2004, 15:54

I Want To Feel by Dave Rodgers

Everyone now is getting used to the dance style and romantic side of Dave that many have forgotten his hard rock style. The only flashback to this style was on the Super Eurobeat Volume 147 cover Not Gonna Get Us. Besides that, pretty much Dave has focused on duets and dance. Well I can officially say that Dave has returned to the rock! Originally on the Gold edition of Super Eurobeat Volume 140 with Run by Fastway, this song hasn't been heard by many. I myself haven't heard it till now. All I can say is that this song is absolutely phenomial. Much like We Are The Children Of Rock and Not For Sale, this song uses guitar work over keyboards. Pretty much the entire song is composed of the guitar rifts and squeals. Dave's vocals are spot on and very amazing to listen to. I personally think Dave is one of the best singers in eurobeat and is edged out by Powerful T. Few can have so much color in their voice which is why, along with the ownership of A-Beat C, Dave is the king of eurobeat. The only thing that perhaps knocks this song from eurobeat nirvana is its slightly non-sensical lyrics. Other than that, this song is truly perfection. Outstanding work by Dave Rodgers!

Dollar Machine by Garcon

Released on JGTC Special 2004 ~Second Round~ not too long ago, Garcon's latest work is a different type of sound for him. A mixture of Walk Around The Jungle and Samurai Samurai, the song starts off rather well actually with energy that was apparent in it's "predecesors". The main issue I have with the song is the point of it really. I know most HI-NRG Attack songs have no sense but even then you can see where they are going with the message of the song. In this one, the whole concept of the dollar machine seems to get lost with the sirens and the repeating of "Dollar Machine!" I'm not sure if he's calling a girl a dollar machine which would actually be rather funny. Anyway, the repeating of "Dollar Machine" weakens the song a bit but the song as a whole is rather good. Only real weakness in this song is the sabi.

Still Love by Nuage

Another new song by Nuage, the biggest project in A-Beat C right now (with a close second by Manuel). The song Flame Love by vivace was supposed to be a cover of Still Love? I'm not sure about that. The two really don't sound anything similar at all. Perhaps there's another song coming out perhaps by Lolita that is the true source of Flame Love but Still Love is more akin to Nuage's classic style. It's disco style is intentional and very smooth and very nicely executed. The singing is very emotional and it keeps impressing me how differently Nuage sings from song to song. Overall great work by Nuage! I can't wait for that new CD from her!

On The Road Again by Powerful T.

No one in the world was happier than me when it was revealed that On The Road Again was going to be released on @Avex. Absolutely one of my favorite Powerful T. songs ever, it was released on JGTC Special 2003 ~Second Round~ and remains faithful to that mix. It's pretty much the same speed, energy and viceral impact. Powerful T.'s vocal capabilities (as talked about above in I Want To Feel) are abosolutely in full force here. Of course, if you didn't know, I might be a little partial to this song since Powerful T. is my favorite singer, but this song is so different from his usually metal eurobeat style. If you have heard Fall In The Web Of Desire, think a faster version of that. This is the territory I believe that Powerful T. should take. The only thing I was hoping this song would have would be a guitar solo but as it is is just fine enough. The guitars in the background add much to the speed and the song as a whole is very energetic and very awesome. The ending is also very emotional as the whole song sounds like a race and then it ends. It's a different way of looking at the songs but try it with other songs and see what you get from them.

Rock Your Fire by Terrence Holler

Apparently another song I missed on the DVD of Super Eurobeat Volume 140. This song is extremely different than most eurobeat. Now I know I was talking a lot about I Want To Feel having great rock influence, but this song has even more rock feel than that song! Pretty much the entire song is guitars! The only time you really notice the keys are slightly after the sabi. But it's pretty much easy to ignore. This song is extremely partial to a certain group. If you like the electrorock style of eurobeat, you have found your Night Of Fire here, if not then you might be a little dissapointed. From my perspective, I found this song to be extremely great to listen to and very interesting. The vocals are rough and rich like a metal singer and the guitars are blazing. I really liked this song. It is quite innovative.

Rumble The Jungle by Babby One

I loved this song when it came out on JGTC Special 2004 ~Second Round~ and I like it more with the special effects given to it. Michael Buffer makes a special appearance with his trademark yell "Lets get ready to rumble!" The song is just fast and energetic and extremely fun! The singing is also very well done. Perhaps my favorite part of the song is the sabi where its almost like a poem (Rumble the jungle, shake up my gun, gamble and rumble come on into the sound! Rumble the jungle you get my freedom, you got the rhythm, you are the one) and it sounds so good. This is my favorite Babby One song ever!

Walk Around The Jungle by Garcon

The first thing people notice (those that have heard it on JGTC Special 2003 ~Second Round~) is that the speed has gone down a bit. Pretty much identical though from a technical standpoint. The song was one of my favorite songs from that CD but now it's lost a little bit of it's feeling with the decreased speed. I definately want to find someone to speed the song up for me but as it is, it just isn't a perfect as it was then. The song though is very great and the a blast to listen to. In my opinion, better than Dollar Machine.

9 out of 10, Gold Award (10 out of 10, Platinum Award if sped up to the speed on JGTC Special 2003 ~Second Round~)

Well I might just as well review some of the songs, you left out.

Mel & Kim - Go Go To Heaven

Okay, this song has been one of my solid favorites from the whole Euromach series for a really long time now, and all this time I was being depressed because there wasn't an extended release of it out, and now that it's out I can honestly say that I'm even more satisfied with it than I imagined I'd be. The song is done with the typical Kiki & Kika style: It's fun, catchy and most importantly very energetic. The lyrics are not very meaningful, but they suit the song just perfectly, and the chorus really sums up everything perfectly. Definitely one of my all time favorites, and now that the extended adds in a great intro and very catchy extra parts in the middle parts I love it even more.

Rating : 10

Christine - Jump Around

The good old Christine is back with a song that resemblences her good old Euromach style perfectly. The song is bouncy like the lyrics, and it has a really cute sound to it, what is amazing about the song is the way the lyrics have managed to create such edge for the song and of course the vocals are great. My own favorite from the unreleased @music songs for sure, and if you yourself loved euromach I'd bet you'll feel right at home with this song.

Rating : 10

Alice In ParaPara Land - Kangaroo In Timbuktu

From all of the unreleased HI-NRG Attack songs this was definitely the best one. The song is energetic and has plain crazy lyrics in the classic HI-NRG Attack style. The song has slightly heavier backgrounds than most HI-NRG Attack songs do, but it fits the song perfectly. The chorus is really simply, yet hard to understand when the lyrics just seem like random words put in a sentence. Either way, the craziness aside the song is perfectly balanced and produced eurobeat what some of us have been waiting to hear since Euromach ended.

Rating : 10

Donna - Can't Help Falling In Love With You

I was rather surprised to hear that there'll be an unreleased Donna song on @music and I'm glad they put the song there. The song is done the good old Delta way, the song isn't as catchy as for example On My Own, but the song works nicely. The intro is clearly the higlight for the song as it has this really exotic touch to it, and reminds me of early Time intros. A good song to carry on the title.

Rating :

I'll probably add more reviews for the songs in the future, but in general I'd say that mostly all of the songs were great. Though some of the unreleased HI-NRG Attack songs were missing the real punch.

Hehehe yes Mel & Kim's song is very good. In fact I found that most of the songs on the @Avex are absolutely must hears in my opinion. If SEB's were put together with more of these songs, they would be absolutely phenominal. Come on bring us more Powerful T.!

Got some more songs just now. Here's my review of:

Dark In The Night 2004

Well... I don't know what to say really. To give it a short simple review would be this. Same vocals, update music + guitars. That kinda sums it all up (in a shallow way). Actually at some parts it kinda really sounds like Mako did redo the vocals (cause his vocals are a bit deeper than the original), but other parts it sounds exactly the same, so I dunno. I can hear female background vocals like the original, kinda sounds a bit like the ones in the original (which was Clara right?), it probably is the same vocals. One thing that did irk me a bit was the contant repetition of "The Night" over and over again, but that was in the extended parts. Oh sorry redtarzanboi no guitar solo (that I can make out at least), but the guitars really make a presence here just like in many recent male Time songs. What I should rate this is still a bit hard to tell for now, we'll see.

Oh one other thing, there is NO C melo ie no second verse, so he pretty much repeats the same thing four times (a bit like SMS).

Another review:

Starkly Ice - Upside Down

Wow a male HI-NRG Attack song that is not sung by Franz Tornado or Babby One *shock! Horror!*. Anyway, this seems to be more like what I guess you would call normal Eurobeat songs, a bit calm too. Normal lyrics too. As usual I can hear Bazooka Girl doing background vocals. I like the songs, I don't think I've heard this guy sing before (what other songs have he sung that have been released?). But to be honest, it's nothing I haven't heard before, but I still think it's catchy and nice to listen to so only one point off.

Opps double post :( well I guess I'll do another review

Black Eva - Space Rider

First thing to note is that the intro sounds very similar to White Is For Your Black Is For Me. Kinda like how Raparapadance's intro was similar to You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly! but that's like it that's where similarities end. I love this song a whole lot, the opening is really cool, intro is cool, it's coolness fits the song title. The vocals are a bit similar to Ely Kotero and Ciao Ciao (could be wrong though). There is nothing I can find bad about this song, very catchy too.
