Elena Ferretti Compilation Album (new release)

Post by Darkholme » 09 May 2013, 13:10

The Elena Ferretti facebook page just released a 20-song compilation of older Ferretti songs, apparently remastered.

They are mostly radio edits, though. :)

Reason being that I can't see a scenario in which 24-bit audio would be possible, or even necessary. If they're remastering from previous digital pressings of the songs, they'll be CD quality, which is 16-bit. Even if they're going from the original tape masters, the digital tape will be 16-bit, and the analog tape will have a noise floor greater than 16-bit audio, so 24-bit remastering would be fruitless.

As well as that, this compilation is being distributed in a maximum of 320k MP3 - and the compression artefacts and heightened noise floor mean that any theoretical gain in quality from 24-bit remastering is totally lost in the compression process.

Taking that into account, it might be interesting to do a test to see whether or not these tracks are actually true 320k quality or just up-sampled from a lower bit-rate. I'll download it, though, because I'm looking for decent-quality radio edits of some old Italo tracks - and this appears to be a decent starting point.

I'm also curious as to what "remastering" actually means in this instance. I, for example, remaster Italo Disco songs by compressing, EQing and cleaning the hell out of them - whereas others might just be looking for a simple bit of gain-matching. And when I'm out walking while listening to my MP3 player, I appreciate the volume being consistent between songs.

I'll download it and post a short review of it when I'm done; watch this space.
Cut-offs @ 18-20KHz. I think it's a mixed bag.

Also, my first reaction was...
>24-bit digitally remastered
>181.41MB

Seems legit.

I guess the interesting ones would be the ones I have never heard before.

Deborah- Danger For My Love
Veronique- Dream On Violine
Magic Fire- Body Dancer

I have the rest on vinyl. Remastered or not. Vinyl is best for me.

,but I'm gonna listen to it anyway :D

I've been wondering for the longest time, isn't this just a fanpage? Which would make this compilation unofficial.
