10th anniversary of the SEB 170s!

Post by Lebon14 » 27 Sep 2016, 20:02

Today, we mark the 10th anniversary for SEB 171 and, starting next month, with SEB 172, etc.

For me, this is a very imporatnt SEB decade as it was the first "SEB Decade" I've followed. Super Eurobeat Vol. 172 (Oct. 24, 2006) is also very important for me: it was the first SEB compilation I ever bought. So many hits...
  • Go 2 - Power
    Dana - I'm OK
Pamsy - Once Upon A Time
    Stephy Martini - Mad Desire
Nick Mansell - Burn Me Up
    Fastway - Rockin' Hardcore
    Ace - Futureland
Energy Man - Bad Bad Bad
Ace Feat. La Gatta - One Touch
    Manuel - Ready Steady Go
Mad Cow - Get My Hot Gun
    Powerful T. - Glorious
Mr. M - The World Is You
    Etc.
And I'm not counting the second CDs we started to get with SEB 174. Such great comps. Is there other people that has a lot of nostalgia looking at that "SEB Decade"?

Some pics I took by myself. Click to enlarge:

P.S Technically started in August with SEB 170... but I don't count it hence why I started here.

Now, I started in the 150s so that's my "first" decade, but the 170s was a very awesome decade. SCP and DELTA really rocked during those 9 albums.

Nice set up. I can proudly say I have all those Cds too. 8)

I79 is one of my most prize possessions from that era for
Toby Vale - Heartbreaker 2007

The time records on that volume were classics from the first listen.

I technically got into eurobeat around mid-2006 but I didn't start seriously listening till I bought my very first CD, SEB 189. I have no real nostalgia for 170s but the era certainly had a lot of great songs, especially from ABC and Delta. SCP was decent too, Hi-NRG was meh and Dima/Sinclaire/Saifam weren't around yet. Looking at the SEB then and now, hard to believe it's almost a decade already, haha.

Your best bet is Amazon Japan. Some are pretty expensive though.

"Today, we mark the 10th anniversary for SEB 171"

Way to make me feel old :( I didn't get started with SEB collecting until the later 170s as well.

Ironically, I started following Super Eurobeat at the exact same point as Lebon (SEB 172), and, even more coincidentally, Pamsy's "Once Upon a Time" was the track that fully cemented my appreciation for the series.

It's quite impressive that the time I got hooked on Super Eurobeat is now as far back as late 1996 was back then. It's the same as if I had begun following the series with Super Eurobeat 72 and SEB 172 was brand new today.

Looking back on the 170s, while they were an occasionally inconsistent decade for the series, SEB 175 is probably one of the series' finest installments, not to mention there are plenty of standouts scattered across the rest of the decade, too. It was easily the heart of Delta's mid-late 2000s golden age, during which, much like Time in the late 90s, the label had several producers and writers all at once, resulting in some of the freshest eurobeat ever released this century. Unfortunately, this was also when A-Beat C declined into its dark age, due to the loss of Sandro Oliva and Alessandra Mirka Gatti to GGM; the label started off solidly during the first few albums, but by SEB 176, the underpowered, uninspired trance sound had fully taken effect. I was also incredibly pissed that Saifam was dropped until SEB 186, although to be fair, they started to decline in quality once the 170s started. Still, I wish "Tekno Samurai" and "Fireball" were on SEB 171, "Like a Speedy Car" and "Aladdin" on SEB 172, and "Rock Me Girl" on SEB 177.

Here's my current top 10 for the 170s:

1. Franz Tornado and Mad Cow Orchestra - Moo Moo Dollars
2. Mr. M - Welcome People
3. Annalise - With Your Photograph
4. Melissa White - Starry Sky
5. Mark Astley - Iron Man
6. Stephy Martini - Mad Desire
7. Fastway - Rockin' Hardcore
8. Pamsy - My Universe
9. Daniel & Cherry - Bach Is Back
10. Kevin Johnson - You Light My Fire

Honorable Mentions:
* Kochiss - Born to Love You
* Lolita feat. Annalise - Screaming
* Christine feat. Elvis El Latino - Viva La Noche
* Danny Rock - Like a Speedy Car (because this SHOULD have been on SEB 172 as was originally planned, and it's one of the greatest Asia productions ever!)

This, on the other hand, would be my bottom 10:

1. Digital Planet - We Can Be Heroes (though it does easily cross into the "so-bad-it's-good" territory)
2. Powerful T. - Back to the Rising Sun
3. Manuel - Countdown to Destination - Easily the only Manuel song that I straight up don't like. Sadly, this was my introduction to him, so it would take about a year (when he released "Gas Gas Gas") before I would fully warm up to him.
4. Powerful T. - Dangerous Love
5. Cherry - Rain (sorry, but it's just not that good; I've never heard the original, but a lot like SEB 186's "Rebel Yell," there's something bizarrely spiritless about this cover)
6. Phil & Linda - Into the Groove
7. Kelly T. - Come Baby Love Me
8. Cherry - Fly (the chorus just ruins this)
9. Vanessa - I'm Ready
10. Cy-Ro - Hi-Speed Mania

I've been listening to dance Music almost all my Life, but I'm very new to eurobeat. It reminds me a lot of the 90's eurodance era here in Sweden and Europé.
It's cool that even 10 years a go, we had producers and vocalists that still release stuff on the seb compilations today too.
