Is this Fastway?

Post by cheeseman » 23 Jul 2007, 21:58

Okay, this has been bugging me for a few months now...

http://cheese.republika.pl/rs.mp3

This is a clip from "Roppongi Suicide" by Asia Gang (Asia Records, ARD 1100). A while ago, I realized that the vocalist sounds like a young Fastway...
I know this song was recorded way back (in 1990), but since Ennio Zanini is over 40, maybe he had a one-time affair with Asia Records back then?

What do you think? Could this be Ennio?

It does sound like it could be Ennio, although he wasn't really involved in the eurobeat scene until he recorded Number One sometime around 1996/1997. But yes, I think it definitely sounds like him. Not that I can think of anyone else whom it might be.

Funny Coencidence is that I was mixing some of my older Boom Boom Beat 12's today and came across that song too. I said, That definately is not Mauro! I didn't think of anyone untill you mention Fastway. Could it be? Who knows, but it does resemble his vocal range a lot?

I did some research on that song, but the only thing I could find is that it's a cover of "Roppongi Shinjuu" by Ann Lewis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUFFYN2e5Rg).
This would explain the unusual songwriting credits, but still no info on the vocalist...

Well I did a bit of searching of my own and had no better luck. I will say this however; I have most of those on vinyl and upon hearing the records surrounding that one(in Catalougue number) I can say that no other record contains those vocals. I never heard anyother Asia Gang, so I couldn't say if it's Mauro on the other ones. If Mauro did in fact alterante his range like in Lillac or Coo Coo then he is scareingly talented to sound so like Fastway 8)

Naaah... I've heard way too many songs by Mauro :P

It's the matter of accent rather than vocal range...
Ennio has got this very specific accent - e.g. the way he pronounces words like "touch", which you can hear in this track.

Sure seems like Asia Gang was none consistent with thier vocals. However the name does implt just a gang were anyone can take lead vocals.

You can't mean Bobby Orlando? Is that song a Venice remake?

Indeed it is a Venice remake but it is not Bobby Orlando. The later songs on 21st Century Records had a male vocalist for Orlando (All Of You) and some other aliases. I don't know his real name though. I'm not even sure if it's a real male voice (not implying anything here) ;) Anyway, Ever & Ever 2000 had the same vocalist.

Oh yeah, I remember now. I started seeing that label appear on Iventi D Azzurro dance charts. That is around the TIME when Euopeans started loosing interest in the superfast Eurobeat of TIME,DELTA,AbaetC and HRGAttack and started liking that Italo Dance stuff a lot more. That is also around the TIME I cancelled my subcription, because the Eurobeat songs were not reaching the Top 10.

The voice of the vocalist of 'Roppingi Suicide' reminds me of the voice of Max Him. For most of the Eurobeat fans no a huge name but for Italo lovers an artist which is well know. 'Just a love affair' if you listen to that one ... and 'Roppongi suicide'.
Perhaps the direction must be going to Florian Fadinger ........

Good luck!

Ronald at work.

For those skeptical about Roppongi Suicide's vocals being Ennio's, not only was he younger at the time, he was also less exposed to cigarettes (you can tell he's quite a smoker by the scratchiness of his vocals), and that honestly probably affected the tone of his voice a bit.

the mystery continiues. As Ronald stated Florian Fadinger has indeed produced with Mauro Farina and Giuianno Crivillente. Here are a few songs he Co-Produced with Saifam.

1. F.C.F.- Samurai (Sayonara Beat)
2. Andrea- Make My Heart Beat (Heart Beat Version)
3. Malcolm J. Hill- Rock & Roll (Stones Version)
4. Cindy -Take Me Up (Lovely Night Version)
5. Asia Gang- Party Time (Extended Version)

...yes even Asia Gang and Since Asia gang allways had different lead vocalist, it just might be him?

There is a song called Fire With Fire by Capo Chino!. This seems to be a cover of a Paul Carrack song (whom I've never heard of actually). The vocals are similar to those of Roppongi Suicide, only somewhat lower. Maybe that's Fadinger too. It was produced by Farina/Crivellente/Fadinger. Newfield might remember, because he recorded and mixed it.

Roppongi Suicide has "additional production by Live Music" so if you're really anxious to know, you can try to contact them.

The problem is, Florian Fadinger didn't sing on as Max-Him tracks. He was only the face.
I'm guessing he couldn't really sing well... :P
I think "Fire With Fire" is some different vocalist (who, by the way, imitated Paul Carrack's voice perfectly :!:).
Another way to find out about Roppongi Suicide would be to contact Ennio himself... He's got a Myspace profile. Do you think he could reply?
