Synth Hook Challenge - just for fun - FINAL RESULTS

Post by the_ditz » 13 Jun 2009, 16:45

Hi everyone,

This is a little game that I used to do on the Bahamut Forever forums just for a bit of fun, and I figured there are quite a few people that might enjoy it here too.

Basically, the game revolves around one of the most unique and instantly recognisable parts of a Eurobeat track - the hook or riff. A great hook can make a song an instant classic, so this game will help test your ability to recognise synth hooks from various Eurobeat tracks past and present.

If you want to take part, here's what you have to do:

1) Download the following mp3 file containing 10 clips of Eurobeat hooks:

ROUND 3 LINKS:
ZIPPYSHARE STREAMING - Round 3.mp3
Download mirror 1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=28QU0LE2
Download mirror 2 - http://www.sendspace.com/file/1qbb3u

2) There are 5 "regular" hooks, each lasting 5 seconds, and 5 "backward" hooks, each lasting 7 seconds. All you have to do is identify the artist and song title that the hooks belong to.

3) For each hook that you correctly identify, you will be awarded up to a maximum of 5 points, however...

4) Hints can be given but they will cost you. You can ask for either the label name of the track (at a cost of 2 points) or the album the song is featured on (at a cost of 3 points).

5) When you have identified all of the hooks, please PM your guesses to me (the_ditz) using the format below:

Hook 1: [ARTIST] / [TITLE]
Hook 2: [ARTIST] / [TITLE]
etc. etc...

Hints can be requested via PM to me - please make it clear what hooks you would like hints for and whether you would like to know the label or album name.

Please make sure that you are certain with your guesses before you send them as changes cannot be made after you send them to me.

**NOTE - NO POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR PARTIAL ANSWERS. I need the artist name and song title of each hook - if you are unsure, remember that the EBPrime.com song database could help you out** ;)

6) Each round will last for around 2 days, after which time all points will be awarded and posted onto a leaderboard. You will receive a PM to acknowledge that I have received your guesses. Each "game" will consist of 3 rounds, with the winner being the highest overall scorer across the rounds.

7) PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN THIS THREAD. If any answers - correct or incorrect - are posted in this thread, the round will be void and no points will be awarded to any player. Remember - PM only! You can discuss how well you think you have done in this thread - just no specific answers or hints please!

Hopefully that's clear - it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top and proves themselves to be the master of the Eurobeat synth hook!

I knew 2 of them.
7 of them were totally unknown to me (I'm NOT into old stuff)
1 is currently bugging me off... 'coz I know it's a really recent song.

Also, for the seven songs I don't know, I would even care asking for hints. Searching alone everything would be like searching a needle in a batch of hay.

The one I know... I will probably be able to figure it out. It's rather recent so I have a chance to discover it.

EDIT

Now, those I know bumped to 3.

Think I got all 10... one I needed a hint for (hadn't heard it in some while, but it bugged me cause it seemed familiar). Looking forward to the results! :)

Good job organising this, Ditz! I'm really looking forward to more of these!

Well, this is only Round 1. We have more of the same in Round 2 (only slightly trickier I think - not as many "well-known" tracks) and then Round 3 will be a potential high-scoring showdown! :P

Glad you enjoyed the challenge - it's tough when you only hear a few seconds of a synth. It would seem soooo obvious in the context of the song, but on its own it can sound entirely different.

hmmm I got only four of them...

This was so fun!

I don't think I have a chance at getting all ten no matter how many hints I get. XD

I can't wait for round two to test my Eurobeat knowledge! Thanks!

You have less than 24 hours to submit your guesses for Round 1.

Remember - you can PM me for a label or album name hint for any of the hooks, but it will cost you 1 point and 2 points respectively. There are some close results so far, but only 5 players have submitted any guesses. Be sure you don't miss out on your chance to show your Eurobeat knowledge! ;)

Round 1 is due to finish in a few minutes - does anyone need a couple of extra minutes to get their guesses in? ;)

A bit harsh? After all, someone could be quite sure of an answer then suddenly realise they made a horrible mistake! :) It's not as if you score everyone until results night!

if you don't get the song right even if you used a hint, does it subtract from your current total from round 1?
