Super Eurobeat 135
1.Mad Max - Sex And Love (Delta)
It's not very common that a Delta artist is put as the album opener (or at
least I can't just now remember very many albums that would've been like
that, I bet there are many...). Mad Max is a great vocalist and he has had
a line of great songs so far, Sex And Love is a rather typical eurobeat
song that relies on quite good backgrounds that are backed up with the
vocals. The c-melody has a nice feel to it, and it feels a bit out of
place as the rest of the song is so different, not a bad start but I've
seen better as well (and worse).
Rating : 7½
2.Go Go Girls - Gimme The Count (A-Beat C)
When I got into eurobeat scene, this track was in the frontline of the
tracks that made me fall in love with the genre. For those of you who
already don't know this is a remake of
Wi*th song Let's Spend The
Night, the original has a lot of kick in it as it is, but the
Go Go
Girls have so far managed to improve all of the cover songs they've
made, so that the original feels boring after the go-go-version. The
typical Go-Go-Energy is present to the max and the song relies on
excellent vocals together with the great melody. The
Hey-He-Hey's
in the c-melody are irresistible and you just gotta sing along to them.
Rating : 10
3.Powerful T. - Night Flight To The Sky (A-Beat C)
The amount of fly-related songs is quite high, and I'm slowly starting to
mix up the different song titles. The excellent vocals by
Powerful T.
are again here, it's just a pity that he hasn't gotten a proper song where
he could really let his voice break free. The track has rather
non-existant sounds and if the vocalist wasn't so easily recognizable this
track would easily fall into the web of common eurobeat songs.
Rating : 7
4.Niki Niki - Without U (Time)
When eurobeat slows down and the tracks lose the extra 5bpm it is often
not a good move. This track starts out slowly and starts building a faster
pace slowly, unfortunately the song suffers from major simplicity. The
backgrounds have a few trickets that sound okay, but there's just not
enough material in there to make this song sound even remotely good, a
pretty good example of eurobeat music gone wrong.
Rating : 5+
5.Denise - Ring A Ling (Delta)
This track reminded me a lot about a
Miss Papaya song called
Operator. The tracks have very similar moods and the lyrics are also
very much alike. This track is pretty standard and it'd really need more
edge to the backgrounds as now they are pretty much only done with synth
and some beats put together.
Rating : 6+
6.The Spiders From Mars - Far Away (A-Beat C)
Why do they have to disguise the artists under so many aliases. I knew
this was
Mickey B. &
Dave Rodgers singing so I was getting ready
to diss the male vocalist for a change, but oh well I'll leave my grudges
aside. Well anyways this song isn't very catchy or special at any
standards, the sounds are typical, vocals are okay but can't create enough
edge to make the song very catchy.
Rating : 6½
7.Paul Harris - King Forever (Delta)
A rather Asian-sounding intro sounds cool as that kind of athmosphere
isn't very used in eurobeat, unfortunately the song starts replaying the
simple melody over and over and after a while it starts sounding very
repetitive. The song has a lot of potential but it really would've needed
a bit more work to make it really catchy.
Rating : 7-
8.J. Storm - Demolition (A-Beat C)
Well I haven't actually somehow paid attention to this fact before but the
vocalist on
J. Storm has to be the same as on
Powerful T.
for some strange reason I haven't ever before thought about it, but this
track really showed me the light. A rather non-existant song yet again, it
manages to have the generally good c-melody but apart from that, this song
goes by without too many hip-hoorays.
Rating : 6½
9.Cherry - Kisses (Delta)
As far as good vocalists go, they can always bring spark into even the
worst songs, Cherry manages to light this track up a bit, but there's just
a lot a miss here. The melody and the sounds are definitely the weakest
link here, and Cherry oughta overlast them. Not her best performance, and
it's a fact that the song is just a runner up on this album.
Rating : 6+
10.Time Force - King Of Your Feeling (Time)
The album has managed to suck a lot up to this point, and I was feeling
quite unhappy with the results. This track though managed to touch the
rock bottom when I had already though it couldn't get worse. The track is
beyond boring and there isn't really anything at all here that would've
made me want to listen to it after this review again.
Rating : 5
11.Susan Bell - I Believe In Miracles (A-Beat C)
After a really horrible song the album fortunately gets a bit better.
Susan Bell has a great voice and she's done some very memorable songs
during her career, this track doesn't have enough kick to make it a
classic like ie.
My Only Star, but a nice song either way. The
chorus is the strongest part of the song and it's quite fun to sing along
to.
Rating : 8-
12.Lou Turner - The River Of My Heart (Time)
Sometimes you have an image in your head about a song about how it'll
sound, I had a clear image of how this song should've been and I was quite
surprised as it was pretty much the opposite of what I thought.
Lou
Turner is somewhere at the very bottom of my list of good vocalists
and therefor I was quite surprised as this track works well due to the
good vocals. The track has a quite simple melody backed up with a couple
of good hooks, a good song, not the strongest one on the album but from
the better end.
Rating : 8+
13.Virgin Power - Hyper Girl (Delta)
This track had me hyper before I even heard it, as I'm a fan of energetic
and hyper music in general, and when they put the word hyper anywhere I
get my hypes up. This track manages to impress me at various levels, the
sounds are simple but somehow they work rather effectively in the song,
perhaps it's just the great melody backed up with good vocals that makes
the song so good. Not the strongest performance on the album but it leaves
you feeling really good.
Rating : 9
14.Mega NRG Man - In The Night (A-Beat C)
Why do they almost always put
Mega NRG Man as the 2nd last artist
on the albums? I've noticed this before and I was just wondering... Well
considering how low the level on this album has been it's nice to hear
that he has put together a really good eurobeat song for a change. The
track has really good backgrounds and they offer more variety than
eurobeat in general does. A good song, that carries on the better level at
the end of the album.
Rating : 8+
15.Nuage - I Just Want To Keep You Hangin' On
(A-Beat C)
From all of the
Nuage songs this was the first one that right
away managed to dazzle me. The intro is quite crappy but as soon as the
simple backgrounds get more energy and the song really blasts into the
action it's a real thrill ride. Excellent melody, excellent sounds and
amazing vocals by one of the better vocalists in the whole eurobeat scene.
This track relies on the good chorus, and like many times before they've
again used a title for the song that makes you think it's a cover, but
alas no, it's a new song...
Rating : 9½
Final Words :
This series has been going up and down during the 130's all the time.
Every other album seems to be really good and the follow-up just crappy.
This album is very uneven as there are just a couple of plain brilliant
songs (
Go Go Girls and
Nuage) but on the other end there are
songs that never should've earned a place in the SEB-series, so the album
left a kind of a negative feel to it in the end. The best songs will
surely stay as my favorites for a long time, but the general level is no
where around the better SEBs.
